Free Art Friday!!

Has a nice ring to it, yes? We are adding our own spin onto the Free Art Friday (FAF) concept. Normally, FAF is when an artist places work on the street for a passerby to pick up. (see this link) Which is awesome, but we are just going to give some art away to a lucky customer every Friday.

Each Friday we will have a different work of art and a different criteria for our little FAF giveaways.
Today is your choice of a set of Aijung Kim artist books and stationery, A shell pendant by Brandon, or an original collage postcard by Art Junk Girl.

NEW website!!!

I recently had a great idea for a new layout for the website, and I’m not a graphic designer by any means, but I used Mircrosoft Publisher to create my vision. It worked great, until I figured out that the home page images don’t show up in Firefox, although the rest of the pages images look fine (and the entire site works great in Internet Explorer)!!

So now if you type in www.theeclipsegallery.com you will get the new site, and to get to the blog you have to type in http://eclipsegalleryblog.com You can also get to the blog via the “about” page by clicking on “news”.

I hope you like the new design. I think it’s much more streamlined, minimalistic, and contemporary. If any of you know how to fix the glitch with the homepage/firefox thing I would love you forever! Thanks, and enjoy!

Book Report: Words of Wisdom

words of wisdom

I just wrote a summary of Words of Wisdom: A Curator’s Vade Mecum, which is a book published by Independent Curators International. You can read it here. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read about curating contemporary art exhibitions. Whether you are a curator, an artist, or lover of contemporary art, you would find this book very interesting.

There is…much that is said about the fact that there are no set-in-stone rules about curating. This is a good thing. As [curators] Jana Sevcikova and Jiri Sevcik state, “Always do only what interests you and what you believe in. Curating is like any other art form: it only serves to express your relationship to the world. No objective rules apply: there is not even a stable hierarchy of values to guide you. The meaning of images is never anchored by any kind of objective truth. You must not fall for the illusion of such truths, and instead propose questions challenging your own assumptions and especially the norms of the cultural establishment…This is the only way you can develop new relationships and provoke lively conflicts for which there exists no common denominator.”
